He also serves on several national boards on refugee and immigration issues, and has offered his expert opinion by appearing as a witness to testify before the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate on immigration legislation committees. His expertise is also often sought by national radio stations and TV programs, such as 60 Minutes and Nightline.

He attended Vanderbilt University and George Washington University for his Bachelor of Arts, and earned his law degree from University of Georgia in 1965. He has been admitted to the Supreme Court of Georgia and the U.S. Supreme Court. He currently teaches immigration law as an adjunct professor at Emory University School of Law.
