When is an EB-5 applicant eligible for a U.S. SSN and license?

I applied for the I-485 with my B-1 visa (my I-526 was approved) and received my notice today. How quickly can I get my U.S. social security number and a driver's license? Will I be able to get the SSN and license when my EAD arrives or do I need to wait for the actual green card?

Once you file your I-485 application and receive the notice of receipt, you may apply for the EAD card. When you receive it, you may apply for the SSN. When you get the SSN, you may apply for a state driver's license.

It takes about 90 days to get a work card that you need to get an SSN.

If you apply for the SSN with employment authorization only, your SS card will state "valid with DHS authorization only." Once you get your green card, you would have to get a new SS card.

You could obtain the SSN with your EAD card when it arrives in about two months, but no later than 90 days of the I-485 receipt date. You do not have to wait until receiving the actual green card. The EAD card will be a combination card that will allow you to work and travel freely until you receive your conditional green card. Your lawyer who helped you with the I-526 and I-485 filings could have explained what to expect and when.

You can apply when you receive your EAD.
