What will happen to my H1-B visa?

I am currently living in the U.S on an H1-B visa, halfway through the agreed 6-year work period. However, I was looking into getting a Ph.D. once that was over. Would that still be a good option in three years, given all the problems with U.S. visas right now? Because all the layoffs taking place right now, I feel I may need to accelerate my plan B to continue living here. I have asked my employer for clarity but I have not received much information.

Ph.D. could be a good option to extend your nonimmigrant stay, especially if you lose your H1-B. Having said, F-1 is a nonimmigrant visa that does not allow immigrant intent. Thus, it is a good temporary solution, but if your plans are to stay permanently in the U.S., it is best to see if you can qualify for any of green card programs (EB-5, EB1A, PERM, etc.).
