What does it mean when USCIS website says “fingerprints/biometrics is not assigned”?

I filed my I-485 last month and on USCIS website it says that my fingerprints/biometrics is currently not assigned for processing. What does it mean? What is the next step supposed to be?

The first step is to assign for fingerprinting and biometrics and since everything is taking longer, expect to see more delay.

Fingerprints and biometrics are very backlogged after being closed for several months due to COVID-19. It may take much longer to get those appointments for some time.

Fingerprints are tricky at the moment, but this probably means that you have not yet been scheduled for an appointment.

The next step is to wait for a notice from USCIS telling you about your biometrics appointment or telling you that biometrics are not needed because they already have your biometrics in their system and it can be reused.

The next step after receipts is biometrics. But if it is not assigned yet, it may mean that the local application support center is not open for fingerprints yet, due to COVID-19 closures.
