How does a reentry permit impact my US citizenship application?

Once I obtain a conditional residency through the EB-5 visa, can I apply for a reentry permit to continue my studies abroad while keeping my permanent residency in the U.S.? For my U.S. citizenship petition, can the time I spend outside the U.S. with a reentry permit be counted towards the 5-year requirement? If not, will applying for a reentry permit impact my ability to seek U.S. citizenship?

Reentry permit helps you to preserve your lawful permanent residency. However, if you spend more than 6 months outside the US at a time, the continuity of your residency will be disrupted. Thus, in most cases, a reentry permit helps preserve residency but delays an ability to apply for citizenship.

Yes, you may apply for a reentry permit to continue your studies abroad while keeping your permanent residency in the U.S. But, time spent outside the U.S. will count negatively towards the 5-year requirement for citizenship. You MUST be *physically present* in the U.S. for 30 months in a 60-month period.

Yes, if you are gone 180 days or more your citizenship will be delayed. You will need 913 days in the U.S. priori to filing to show you are eligible.

The time you spend outside the US that is over 6 months interferes with your time necessary to qualify for citizenship. The re entry permit allows you just to preserve green card.
