How can I have a side job on an H-1B visa?

Would it be possible for me to have a freelance or part-time side job while still on my H-1B visa? I am trying to increase my income and having a job alternative in case of layoff — there have been quite a few in my industry.

No you may not legally do this until you file the I-485 with your I-526 and then obtain an open-marked work permit. You are allowed to have multiple H-1B’s if you find another H-1B employer for full or part-time work.

The only way to have another job in your case is have a concurrent H1B. Otherwise, you can only work for your current H-1B employer.

You can do a side job as long as you obtain a concurrent H-1B visa sponsored by the side job employer.

No, H-1B holder cannot work for another employer other than the H-1B sponsoring employer nor work as a self-employed (or freelance). Self-employed or freelance is also considered an employment, without authorization, this employment is unlawful.
