Can I apply for DS-260 while renovating my passport?

I am filling out a DS-260 form for a DV lottery, but, unfortunately, my passport has expired. Can I renovate my passport while applying?

You need a valid passport to apply.

If the passport expires during the DS-260 application process and before the interview, you can update your DS-260 application online or at the US Consulate before your interview. You also need to bring both the old and new passports to your interview.
