What is the travel timing for an I-829 extension holder?

I have filed my I-829 application and received the 48-month extension receipt. I am planning an international trip and intend to return around January 25. Some advise me to return before January 20 due to potential regime changes. What would you recommend in this situation?

If still within the 48-month extension time, you will be fine. You are not the group that Trump is likely to go after as you are legal.

You remain a conditional permanent resident (green card holder) while your I-829 is pending, with the difference that the documents evidencing your status differ. To reenter the U.S. after international travel, you must carry your expired green card and the original of your I-829 receipt notice (containing a 48-month extension). To avoid issues reentering the U.S., make sure your return is within the validity of your extension.
