2016 New York EB-5 & Investment Immigration Convention Recap
In its first major event in New York City, EB5 Investors Magazine hosted the 2016 New York EB-5 & Investment Immigration Convention July 17-18—a conference that attracted more than 700 people and featured keynote addresses by members of Congress, famed economist Dr. Arthur B. Laffer and Beijing Entry and Exit Service Association President Charles Qi.
The conference held at the landmark Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, coming shortly before the September 30 deadline for reauthorization of the EB-5 program, drew bipartisan support and participants from both sides of the aisle, including speeches by U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, and U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y. The congressmen spoke about the importance of the EB-5 program in attracting billions of dollars in foreign investment and generating tens of thousands of American jobs.
Held just minutes away from Times Square, in a city with a skyline partially built with EB-5 capital, the two-day event welcomed a broad spectrum of industry stakeholders, including migration agents from around the globe.
EB-5 industry professionals, international intermediaries, developers, attorneys and others also attended the conference that featured numerous networking opportunities and was designed to foster relationship-building and learning across the full spectrum of the EB-5 program. Coming on the heels of its Las Vegas conference—its largest EB-5 event in domestic history—EB5 Investors Magazine hosted the New York conference with the help of more than 73 sponsors.
One of the highlights was a keynote address by Dr. Laffer—known as “The Father of Supply-Side Economics” for the role he played in the global tax-cutting movement of the 1980s. Dr. Laffer, founder and chairman of Laffer Associates, an institutional economic research and consulting firm, is the inventor of the “Laffer Curve,” one of the main theoretical constructs of supply-side economics. A member of President Reagan’s Economic Policy Board and an advisor to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, Time magazine included Dr. Laffer in “The Century’s Greatest Minds” cover story in 1999. Dr. Laffer spoke about the effectiveness of the EB-5 program and its benefits for the United States.
The conference started on Sunday with workshops for migration agencies, EB-5 attorneys and regional centers, while the Monday sessions were structured around dual-track educational panels and networking opportunities for both EB-5 program beginners and experts alike.
The workshops and panels included topics such as “Hot Investor Issues in EB-5,” “Putting Together a Successful EB-5 Petition for Investor Clients,” “Putting Together an Approvable EB-5 Project,” “The Future of EB-5” and “EB-5 Litigation Issues: SEC Enforcement and Civil Suits.”
The conference concluded with a networking cocktail for all attendees. The infusion of newcomers at the event provided business opportunities for many in the community. EB5 Investors Magazine looks forward to hosting more events that bring the entire EB-5 community together to foster education, networking, and community engagement.
The New York conference is part of a series EB5 Investors Magazine hosts around the world as a leading source for networking, training, important legislative discussions and other matters relating to the EB-5 program. In recent years, EB5 Investors Magazine has hosted conferences in Shanghai and Guangzhou in China, Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Newport Beach in Southern California.
